The most noticeable feature at Mingo is the red covered bridges. However, this Finleyville park has much more to offer. The paved bike trail travels parallel to the road and the creek and gives walkers or bikers access to beautiful views - and access to wild raspberry bushes! My favorite activity at Mingo, however, is the creeking. Mingo also hosts monthly star parties at their observatory which has two permanent telescopes. People also bring their portable telescopes, and invite others to take a look. In the past, I have seen Jupiter and its moons, Saturn, a very close up view of the Moon, and the international space station. It is truly amazing to view an object that you know is millions of miles away in detail. It’s hard to believe that you’re not viewing a photo.
Creeking can mean different things to different people. Some just splash in the creek. Others try to step on rocks and not get their feet wet. Others bring nets and pails and try to catch creek animals. In the past, I have caught minnows, crawfish, dragonflies, and dragonfly larvae (which looks somewhat scary). I know that there are many other species out there, so keep looking!
